The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

Sometimes we forget about it, but soccer is a global phenomenon, it’s not just us, Latinos, who enjoy it. So it makes perfect sense that people who speak languages other and Spanish and Portuguese also make songs about this sport.

DJ Monk-One of Names You Can Trust (the Brooklyn-based boutique record label that released Latino artists such as La Mecánica Popular, Meridian Brothers, Frente Cumbiero, Doctor Stereo, and more) is an expert of sorts in international music and an avid rare vinyl collector so, with the excuse of the World Cup, he compiled and put together this mixtape full of fútbol-themed songs you never heard of. There’s some Spanish and some Portuguese hiding in there–of course–but also plenty of English, French, German, and other languages I can’t even pretend to distinguish, all of them singing about the same topic, the same global obsession.
