The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

MIXTAPE: Brazilian Dancefloor Mixtape 2014

I’m an unconditional lover of Brazilian music (and everything Brazilian, really) but I’m sick of hearing the same trite, common-place Brazilian songs at every party I attend here in the US. It’s like all DJs (I’m talking to you Latin DJs, hip-hop DJs, party-rocking DJs in general) have about five Brazilian go-to tracks to choose from and they just stick to them. How annoying is that!

That’s why when I first saw Lucio K spinning at a party, he blew my mind and I became an instant fan of his work. He was playing stuff that nobody plays and effortlessly engaging a mixed crowd into shaking their booties to the batuque beat without ever, not even once, dropping “Magalenha,” or “Nossa, Nossa,” or any of those lame clichés. Plus, he makes his very own remixes and mashups.

Here we have his latest mixtape, an unpretentious hour-long set of straight up modern Brazilian party music packed with lots of sub-bass frequencies, electronic maracatu beats, rasterinha, baile funk, and some of his very own compositions intertwined in there too. Pure booty-shaking delight.
