The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Hernán Cattáneo
MIXTAPE: Resident Episode 172

I didn’t get to go to Burning Man this year so I missed Hernán Cattáneo’s set at the playa, and I envy my friends who were there. I know it’s nowhere even close to the real live experience in the Nevada desert, and it could never be, but last night I listened to his latest mixtape and imagined I was there, half naked and covered in dust, dancing to his epic house mixes.

Hernán Cattáneo, if you aren’t familiar with the house music scene, is basically one of the biggest international DJs ever to come out of Latin America. He’s a DJ’s DJ, a constantly dropped name when the house music cognoscenti discuss favorite DJs. He has held residencies in some of the best clubs in Europe, and played along the biggest names in the EDM game. But he was also the DJ that played at the nightclub down the street from my house in Buenos Aires right around the time I started going out at night in the early ’90s so, for me and my high-school buddies, he’s like our national hero. The Maradona of Argentine DJs.

So there, wishing I was at Burning Man with my high-school buddies reviving our early clubbing experiences, I’ll keep on listening to Cattáneo’s set today on my headphones at work, feeling like I’m wearing way too much clothes for this.
