VIDEO: Venus X, Füete Billēte and Álvaro Díaz On Urban Culture in the Internet Age

Cultura Dura is a Remezcla and Mike’s HARDER content and event series highlighting emerging Latin urban culture. We’ll be exploring scenes that haven’t really gotten any coverage anywhere else – from block parties and street art to underground sports and raw, young artists making movements pa’ la calle.

As a digital publication that covers culture, we’re constantly confronted with the myriad ways the internet is shaping the creative output of a new generation of Latinos. Culture is no longer fixed to a specific physical place or moment in time; its means of production are user-generated, open-source, multi-platform and available globally. This observation, of course, is nothing new — for close to a decade thinkers and creators have been looking at the ways that the internet has facilitated the creation, sharing and transformation of culture.

But how do you take movements born in digital spaces offline and into the tangible world? That’s what we hope to do with our Cultura Dura tour, which brings together forward-thinking urban artists who have so far only been grouped together in online spaces.

Venus X, Füete Billēte and Álvaro Díaz — some of the artists who kicked off our tour in NYC — may make different types of music, but what they have in common is a post-colonial approach to reinventing urban sounds that could have only been born in the internet age. And a determination to take their vision off your computer screens and into your clubs.

In the video below, we talked to them about their inspirations, ambitions, and how the internet informs their work:
