Viva la mujer! Saturday, the Brooklyn Museum kicked off Women’s History month with a bang as female artists Venus X, TECLA, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, Zuzuka Poderosa, Niky Roehreke and others shared their array of talents with the community. We continue the celebration this week as we honor la mujer artista in several exhibitions by or about women.

Women in the Heights – Reflections on Creating

The Northern Manhattan Art Alliance or NOMAA is hosting an exhibit curated by ubiquitous art curator Andrea Arroyo. The show has work by 25 women artists who live among the Washington Heights, Inwood, El Barrio and Harlem neighborhoods. As you’d imagine with such a large group show, artistic styles run the spectrum. Illustrator Danielle Rocio creates elongated figures with idiosyncratic features like tongue tattoos and stretch-marked pregnant bellies. Her strong graphite shading technique and ability to portray personality in her characters is what gives her work energy. Another artist with a colorful CV is Mexican artist Antonia Guerrero. Her work involves eerie 2D works, installations and strange performances where women bathe themselves in liquid from large conch shells. The opening reception will be Wednesday, March 5th from 6 to 8 pm.

Oro Dulce

Oro Dulce is an exhibit and film by Francisca Benitez that focuses on the production of the golden yellow pear-like quince fruit, harvested in Chile. The film seeks to explore connections between urban and rural exchanges of products and services and does so through the lens of Chilean quince. Cuchifritos gallery, where the exhibit and film screening is to be held, is situated in Essex street market, a fitting place for an inquiry into food production and the traditions and community that entails. The reception is Wednesday, March 5 from 5-7pm but the film plays daily March 5th through 9th from noon to 6pm. An artist talk will also take place Sunday, March 8 from 4 to 5pm.

Vistas Latinas Archives of a Collective, 1989 – 2014

Vistas Latinas or Latina Views is a curatorial project by MA and MFA graduate students at Hunter College with an opening party this Thursday, March 6th, from 6 to 8pm. The exhibit will be on view until March 28th but the gallery is only open Wednesday through Friday 1 to 6pm. It must be something super exciting because details about the show are quite obscure. Have a fun art week and make sure to tell the women in your life how amazing they are!
