State of the Art: The NYFW Edition

State of The Art is Remezcla’s weekly guide to Latin art openings in your city each week. In the thick of NYFW amid rainbows of exotic furs and bare nipple trends, we should not forget the many Latin@ events involving the artistry of fashion and design. Here are a few fashion-friendly Latin@ art events with which to fill your week:

Empowering Artisan Fashion: Weaving Tradition and Innovation

Weavers and designers from indigenous communities who make elaborate textile art are often not given the credit they deserve for the intricate designs and creative pieces they produce. In addition to not receiving acknowledgement, opportunities to progress and grow are also not available to weavers and designers from certains regions. In this round table discussion, three different organizations from Chiapas/France, Brooklyn/India and another from Chiapas will present projects that help to empower artisans who make ancestral textile art. The event will also include an exhibition of the textile fashions and free Spanish wine. This event is part of a project between the Museum at FIT and the Instituto Cervantes that spotlights the influence and success of Latin@s in the fashion industry. There is a host of programming until May under the project name Hispanic American Fashion Culture. Registration is free for the event, just RSVP by e-mail to cult3ny@cervantes.es. The event will be Tuesday, February 11th, at 7pm.

A Human Extension

Art and fashion can sometimes seem to mirror each other. How much might depend on who you ask, but it can be said that art has a reputation for being heady and intellectual, while fashion frivolous and lighthearted. However, there are many overlaps in the fashion and fine art worlds. In addition to designing apparel, many fashion designers are fine artists, and some fine artists make clothes. In this 28-artist exhibit, an attempt is made to investigate this complicated relationship between art and fashion through an examination of the fashion accessory. The show includes several Latino artists. The show is only up through February 16th!

Joey Rolon and Jimmy Crystal Celebrate their Hollywood Collection

On Monday, February 10, from 7 to 10pm, Bronx-born stylist and fashion designer Joey Rolon along with Jimmy Crystal will be presenting their Hollywood Collection at Imagine Gallery. Rolon’s shop Funky Sexy Couture has been dubbed “a wearable art gallery.” Rolon has worked with a collection of stars including Lady Gaga, Pitbull and more.
