Contemporary art from Latin American artists who come from 15 different regions are being shown at the Guggenheim until October 1st. The exhibit aims to show a diverse body of work responding to the varied economic, social and political happenings in the heterogeneous expanses of Latin America, and it’s huge. 37 artists and collaborative duos have 50 different works in the show. Some of the works have a political spin like Colombian artist Wilson Diaz’ pieces concerning the coca plant and its criminalization. Other works are more conceptual like the large geometric shapes made of translucent plastic by Amalia Pica. The shapes are meant to be used in performance to intersect and overlap via color and form, creating new and alternative ideas. The art pieces range from installations, video, photography, mixed media pieces to paintings and works on paper. There’s a lot to see and you have the whole summer so get a glimmer of the contemporary Latin American art scene at the Guggenheim. Pay-what-you-wish hours are from 5:45 to 7:45pm on Saturdays.
ArtMorphosis
There’s an art party this Saturday at ExitRoomNY. It’s another group show of sculptors, street and fine art painters, just plain visual artists and music producers. This show is music heavy and will employ the use of electronic music to experiment and possibly uncover different art forms. The list of artists showing work is lengthy but includes a few notables. Jonathan Sanchez from the Dominican Republic creates sculptures–some of which mimic bodily orifices. Kashink’s highly detailed street art that sometimes involve elaborate decorated cakes and four-eyed figures will also be featured. Harlem artist Marthalicia Matarrita will also be showing. The party is this Saturday from 6pm to 1am.

Rafael Silveira: Unforeseeable
Also opening Saturday June 28th at ArtNowNY is a show featuring comic book artist turned painter Rafael Silveira from Brazil. His work is fun, surreal and rendered with precision. Most of his paintings are comical and lighthearted like the portraits of Victorian women with ice creams on their heads or the meticulous botanical drawings where a tulip is smoking a pipe. Anthony Lister will be sharing the opening with Silveira in the opposite gallery. ArtNowNY has great openings and I’m sure there will be wine. Have fun!
