Set your DVRs, film nerds. Robert Rodriguez is talking with Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro on his El Rey Network, July 30 at 9pm. The longtime BFFs are set to talk about del Toro’s kaiju and Hellboy infested mind and the art of practical effects. I hope they make time to discuss the creepy pictures that influenced a pequeño Guillermo. If we’re lucky, we might even hear about the duo’s upcoming projects like Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and the del Toro produced animated Dia de Muertos tribute The Book of Life.

In case you were wondering what Rodriguez was up to since Machete Kills, he’s mostly been in the headlines for his other pet project, El Rey Network. Si mijito, it’s a channel with its own grindhouse movie playing every Friday and a section of its website devoted to upcoming kung fu flicks. But there’s more: Rodriguez re-launched his cult vampire hit From Dusk Till Dawn as a TV series and introduced the new drama Matador into his summer line-up.

Where does del Toro fit into all this midnight movie madness? Well, another series on the channel teams Rodriguez with fellow directors to talk about the art and craft of directing, appropriately named The Director’s Chair. His inaugural guest was horror legend John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing, Assault on Precinct 13, They Live, I could go on), and for August, Rodriguez is inviting his other BFF Quentin Tarantino over for a conversation that I hope is as long as the runtime of the duo’s Grindhouse. So don’t forget your date with del Toro and Rodriguez…
