The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

We haven’t heard from El Guincho in a while and I think this new, unexpected, mixtape of him is a good sign that he’s actively working on some soon-to-come new release, and we couldn’t be happier about it. It can also be a sign of the new direction his future work might be taking, with a lot more club-oriented beats and less steel drums.

We don’t know for sure, this is just speculation (the info accompanying the mixtape is scarce). It could also be just him getting crazy in a trippy mode and wanting to experiment with something different as a sort of side project, you know, like pretending to be a DJ at a nightclub in a moon of the Dagobah System.

Of course his signature style of over-layering hypnotic tropical samples is there and intact. Also, the use of inintelligible vocals in whatever language that is, is present.
