Video Premiere: Piñata Protest’s “La Cucaracha” [USA]

We’ve seen plenty of musicians mix up the accordion with lots of beats, raps, etc. (Nortec Collective, Mexican Dubwiser, etc.), but how many bands have used the accordion as a punk-rock instrument on a regular basis? I can’t think of any at the moment, which is why I’m happy that Piñata Protest showed up when it did.

The quartet from San Antonio, TX, is proof that you can be as punk as the best of them with an accordion strapped to your chest. The band will release its latest album, El Valiente, this Tuesday, a 10-track collection of accordion punk (that’s a thing now, you guys!).

The album will also feature the band’s own blistering version of “La Cucaracha,” which also has its own video. The accordion makes an appearance in the video but not the album track, as it’s swapped for an equally-as-punk pocket trumpet.
