The heat has arrived here in Valladolid, Spain, and with it the desire to try new and refreshing drink and drink-food combinations. I’ve got just a few suggestions for you, based on what my peeps are sipping here at lunch time, at merienda time, and all the time. You don’t have to come visit Spain to drink like a Spaniard.

#1 Clarita aka Shandy. Cerveza con gaseosa, aunque también se puede mezclar con limón, lo que se conoce como una shandy. START CLASSIC; BEER WITH SODA, LEMON SODA, OR JUST LEMON.
In a pitcher, pour in the soda first, then add the beer. Should be served very cold.

#2 Tinto De Verano. El tradicional combinado de vino tinto y gaseosa. De igual forma, se sirve con limón. TRY RED WINE, A SHOT OF VERMOUTH, ORANGINA.
Fill a wine glass with a generous amount of ice cubes. Add a slice of orange or lemon and a bit of vermouth, then fill half the glass with lemonade or lemon soda to taste. Top the glass off with a good red wine, stir with a spoon and enjoy!

#3 Agua de Valencia. Zumo de naranja con cava. TEEN VERSION UPS THE ANTE WITH OJ, BUBBLY, VODKA, SUGAR & GIN
To make 1 liter:
-Between 5 & 8 oranges (around 500cl)
-20cl of Cava or Champagne (semi-brut if possible)
-20cl of Gin
-20cl of Vodka
-6 Tablespoons of sugar

If you’re 30 +, pair these drinks with some tapas of seafood, seafood, seafood (think gambas) or jamon, and you’re drinking Madrileño. Just be sure to grab a good spot on the terraza looking fabulous and well-rested, without a care in the world. If you’re 20 – , take your tinto de verano Don Simon to the park, roll your own cigarettes and chill so hard with friends while playing the tonto till 8 am or later 😛
