This announcement comes just in time to undermine the many bathing suit and jort work out promises I’ve been making myself for summer: tomorrow, Washington Heights and Inwood are kicking off their first ever restaurant week! Just 18 restaurants are participating in this inaugural week – running Wednesday, May 15th and running through Sunday, May 26th – and not surprisingly about a third of them are Latin. Time to indulge the foodie fantasies! Here are the restaurants participating:
809 Sangria Bar and Grill
This Nuevo Latino spot features a Caribbean menu (its name pays homage to the area code in the DR), and a bajillion varieties of sangria. This isn’t really a quiet dinner spot – the music is usually turned all the way up – but if you’re looking for a place to get prendido/a before going out, look no further.

Cafe Tabaco Y Ron
This restaurant somewhat confusingly bills itself as “Italian International,” but its menu is, in fact, predominantly pan-latin. Offerings include quesadillas, mofongo, ceviche mixto, ropa vieja and yuca melt, something they call “latin caesar salad.”

Mamajuana Cafe
This cafe is just as intoxicating as the DR elixir of wine, honey, herbs, and rum, it’s named for. Attractive crowds, good music, yummy cocktails and Caribbean fusion tapas – what more could you want?

MamaSushi
This relative newcomer fuses Dominican flavors and ingredients with traditional Japanese sushi (think sushi rolls topped with sweet plantains). If you like Sushi Samba, you’ll probably be into this fusion spot!

Papasito Mexican Grill & Agave Bar
This spot does “American Mexican” really well (i.e. delicious nachos, quesadillas, etc.) and also features more traditional recipes. Come thirsty: it offers over 150 tequilas, served alongside a wine and cocktail list.

Parrilla Steakhouse
This spot has been trying to clean up its image after a spate of bad PR last year (it was embroiled in a series of scandals). The Argentine steak house has since changed owners and made a number of changes, like soundproofing, hiring new security personnel and installing new ID verification machines, but word on the street is the waits are still long for what amounts to mediocre steak. Eat at your own risk!
