The 4th annual Cinema Tropical Awards are around the corner and nominations have just been announced. Celebrating the recent renaissance of Latin American filmmaking, Cinema Tropical has created these awards to honor the region’s best films of the year. Prizes are awarded to fiction and documentary films produced in Latin America. This year, a new category was added to also highlight those working in the Unites States — Best U.S. Latino film.

A jury made up of film critics, programmers, producers, and film directors decide the winners. In late January, the awards are presented at a special ceremony at the New York Times building in New York. By the looks of it the competition is rough.
