September may herald the end of summer and the not-too-distant onslaught of a brutal winter (at least for us East Coasters). But since we’re glass half full people, we’ve chosen to focus on the silver lining: bathing suit season is over, which means we can eat, drink and party with more abandon than ever. Which is exactly what we plan to do for Mexican Independence Day – one of our favorite fall bacchanals. This year, we’ve tailored our Mexican Independence Day event recommendations around one guiding principle: places where you can turn up as much as the guys in “Borrachos Bailando Un Rayo de Sol” video. This restaurant has two locations – one in Park Slope and one in the East Village – and both are delicious. On Sunday, Sept. 15, they’ll be celebrating Mexican Independence with a happy hour that kicks off at 4pm, and live performances Mariachi Tapatio (performing from 6-7 in Park Slope and 8-9 in the East Village). You can also order from a range of food specials, including traditional dish Chiles en Nogada, which includes ingredients the color of the Mexican flag.

This spot opened just a few months ago in Williamsburg, adding to the booming scene of authentic Mexican street food in Brooklyn. Stop by for the cantina vibes, the delicious aguachiles, and also because they just got a huge shipment of Victoria beer (for the first time in NYC!!). Doesn’t get much more Mexican than that…

Casa Mezcal is bringing several days of specials and celebrations for Mexican Independence. Friday the 13th there will be a late night happy hour from 9:30 to 11:30 that includes $5 beers $7 margaritas, and $7 Dewars (shot, rocks, or mixed). Saturday the 14th the happy hour special also includes $10 banderitas (shot of lime, shot of tequila and shot of sangritas), and Sunday the 15th happy hour is extended from 12-7pm.

Hecho en Dumbo will be celebrating Mexican Independence Day with the launch of a new brunch menu, aka start your feasting and drinking EARLY. New menu offerings include Huevos Rancheros Benedictos, a duo of poached eggs in a hollandaise salsa ranchera perched over cornmeal butter biscuits with smoked ham; Hot Cakes de Requesón, ricotta pancakes topped with cinnamon butter and candied strawberry syrup, and a full menu of Mariscos – fresh oysters, razor clambs, ceviches and seafood cocktails! While indulging in the food you can also take in masterful performances by the likes of Mexican alt/folk hero Rana Santacruz, Brooklyn-based all-female mariachi group, Flor de Toloache, and honkytonk/early rock with Marek and the Boss Chops.
