In 2011, renowned pastry chef Carlos Salgado left his San Francisco restaurant,Commis, and returned to his roots in Orange County. It was then that he took over the 25-year-old taqueria owned by his family, and launched the truck, Taco Maria, named after “my mother, her mother, and her mother, and on and on.” It was through that strong family tradition and he created the “first generation Mexican” menu with a twist, that would go on to win awards such as Best Restaurant and Best Gourmet Food Truck by the OC Weekly and OC register, amongst others.

And now here’s where you can help! In July of this year, they will be opening their permanent doors at The OC Mart Mix in Costa Mesa. Although the family have already invested a large amount of time and money, they still need help in furnishing the kitchen and making the empty retail space as cozy as a family home. They are planning an open kitchen with a dining bar and a heated outdoor patio and will be serving lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, featuring hand made tortillas, wood-grilled sustainable meats, hand-crafted aguas frescas, and much more.(I have to mention that they make”las gaviotas”-beer battered avocados-because YES.)

By contributing to their Kickstarter campaign (which will run until July 10), you will be supporting a family business that has served local farmers markets, art walks, school fundraisers, and has continually supported the community and tradition. Now is the chance where you can give back, and receive anything from their mysterious “salsa negra,” cooking classes from Taco Maria, to tokens for food and appetizers. Let’s face it- very few things are better than good food made by good people.
