“Ball is our religion, and the park is our church,” says Bobbito Garcia of his love for what he feels is one of the definitions of NYC street culture, pick-up basketball. Bobbito Garcia is a legendary renaissance man in NYC culture, doing everything from DJing, sideline reporting for the Knicks, co-founding Bounce Magazine and writing acclaimed book, Where’d You Get Those? NYC’s Sneaker Culture: 1960-1987.
After meeting French photographer and NYC streetball aficionado Kevin Couliau a few years ago, they decided to combine forces and began shooting ‘Doin’ It In The Park,’ their passion project, in the summer of 2010. With no experience or outside funding, they hit over 180 courts to film, listen, and play with the people that make this sport unique to NYC. After their documentary was completed, they gained success at various film festivals, but they didn’t want it to end there. Garcia and Couliau are planning on self distributing their film for an independent commercial release and they need your help to cover costs of music licensing, marketing, promotions, and bookings.
Their Kickstarter campaign ends on February 20th, and they’re only $4,000 short of their goal! Help them share a part of NYC culture, and as Bobbito says, “lucky for us, no one had ever made a documentary about pick-up basketball before, and now that we finished it, hopefully no one will ever have to again.”
