The music heavyweights of rock en tu idioma and in Latin music unite for a great cause in support of the preservation of Mexico’s sacred indigenous lands. On May 26th, 2012, Cafe Tacvba, Caifanes, Julieta Venegas, Enrique Bunbury, Calle 13, Ely Guerra, and Sonidero Mestizo, will headline at the Wirikuta Fest, in Mexico City’s Foro Sol. Other performers include Amandititita, Dr. Krápula Lengualerta, Hector Guerra, Venazo Azul, Luix Saldaña, Veintidós and others. Overall, more than twenty bands will share two stages in one day!
The goal of this fest is to shed light on the ongoing marginalization of the indigenous population of Mexico. This fest was primarily catalyzed when President Felipe Calderon granted access to Canadian mining companies to enter the sacred territories of Mexico and dig up for some silver. Located in the desert of the central state of San Luis Potosi, Wirikuta is one of the sacred places of the Wixárika people (Huichol) and brings together the most preserved sixth ethnicity from the prehistoric period. In 1999 it was declared by UNESCO as one of the 14 sacred natural places of the world that must be protected. In 2009 the Mexican government granted 22 concessions to Canadian mining company First Majestic for the exploitation of silver. Experts point out that the environmental and cultural impacts will be irreversible, because more than 60% of the surface under concession to the company is located within the protected natural area. 150 intellectuals and artists from 30 countries asked President Felipe Calderón last December to cancel the concessions.
In addition to artists performances, the fest will also feature indigenous dances, urban art exhibitions, documentaries, samples of ancestral medicine, and more.
