Novalima‘s Afro-Peruvian groove is back. This time through Thievery Corporation‘s ESL record label, they are releasing Karimba, their third official album, after earning a Latin Grammy for their previous, Coba Coba (2009, Cumbancha).
If you still don’t know them, Novalima is pretty much to traditional Afro-Peruvian music what Gotan Project is to Tango in Argentina. They grabbed this old music genre that was widely disregarded by the local youth and made it cool again by sampling it and layering it on top of modern dance beats, igniting a whole new wave of interest in this music roots among the younger audiences.
Also, they are the coolest thing to come out from Peru since the youtube sensation Wendy Sulca. Just kidding. But really, it’d be dope if they had her as a guest in a track. By the way, did you see Wendy Sulca made a song with Argentine rock legend Fito Paez? No I’m not kidding this time. Google it, or actually don’t bother, it sucks.
What doesn’t suck, at all, is Novalima‘s new album (except for the album cover that looks awful) and it’ll be released on iTunes and all other digital retailers in January 31st. In the meantime here you have a free track from that album and a video of them playing it live at some TV show.
