Those who follow Remezcla beyond the website may know that the company is into partnering with alcoholic beverages to throw parties during the Latin Grammys for the sake of celebrating its nominees. Of course, we’re delighted to be a part of this curation in the spirit of celebrating the music we’re really into, especially for our artists friends we’ve featured and bonded with, before they go mainstream. So with Latin Grammys and all, it’s also a bit confusing to have a “Latin Category” in the Grammys. I mean, that’s the whole purpose of why the Latin Grammys were invented in the first place: to fill in the gaps between generic genres by specifying a more appropriate genre categorization– as I’m sure you all know.
For example, within the 35 categories, you have anywhere between one to six sub-categories for each of them. Under “Latin,” we have four. These are: “Best Latin Pop Album” (the nominated folks on this sub-category are those who get tons of air play. The rest that follow, meh, not too much); “Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album” (smashed into one sub-category? seriously?! Remezcla loves these nominees! But seriously, they don’t even play the same type of music. Anyways.); “Best Regional Mexican Music Album (Including Tejano)” (because Tejano is not really Mexican. But can you still believe that one country gets entirely its own sub-category?); “Best Tropical Latin Album” (which of course includes salsa, merengue, cumbia, bachata, etc.), y tan tan. We’re proud to see indie artists like Carla Morrison, Ana Tijoux, Campo, and Sistema Bomb make it to this music industry pinnacle. And we’d be further delighted to throw more parties in their honor.
