Kmart to Create Telenovelas?

Sears Holdings Corp. is reaching out to its Hispanic base by producing an eight part, Kmart branded YouTube miniseries series called Madres y Comadres “about the bond between Latina friends and family.” To be released in time for the back-to-school rush, Madres y Comadres will focus on the plight of Latin mothers raising their American-born children.

The show will be scripted and documentary-style, a la The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Modern Family, and filmed in Darien, Connecticut; it will be shot in Spanish with English subtitles. Perhaps more interestingly, the show will be accompanied by videos of real interviews with actual immigrant mothers from Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Guatemala raising children in the states.

We have to admit that when we first heard this, it sounded like pandering, but the more we read the more interested we are. We have high hopes for Madres y Comadres, especially after seeing this trailer.
