Cajun Meets Criollo: MIA and NOLA Brass Collide

If there are two cities in the US that can brag about their unique flavor, it’s the MIA and NOLA. Taste the unique musical flavorings of the Magic City and the Big Easy with The Hot 8 Brass Band (NOLA), ¡Suénalo! (voted Miami Best Latin Band 2011)  and Grammy-Nominated Locos Por Juana this weekend at The Big Bad Brass Party at The Stage. The three-night event kicks off this Thursday with The Hot 8 Brass Band who are also the common denominator each night, playing on Friday  with Miami favorites ¡Suénalo! and Locos Por Juana on Saturday. This soulful musical menu is sure to get the crowd going with their big brass, funk, hip-hop, reggae fusion of caliente sounds.

The Hot 8 Brass Band, like all of New Orleans, has had its share of tragedy in the aftermath of Katrina. Hot 8’s work with the Finding Our Folk Tour has brought music to evacuee shelters, temporary trailer parks, and to communities throughout the US that have provided a temporary home to displaced New Orleans’ families. Their efforts were featured on CNN, Nightline, New York Times, HBO and Spike Lee’s Katrina documentary “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts.” The Hot 8 Brass Band is a NOLA favorite and most notably known for their contagious brass infused hip-hop, funk, and jazz and have toured internationally bringing their music and message to the masses.

All that dancing will probably make you hungry, but have no fear. Authentic Cajun country ‘Po Boys will be served up by The Rum Cake Factory on Friday and Saturday, voted the Best by the Miami New Times. The Stage’s outdoor courtyard will play host to The Rum Cake Factory who create the best Cajun food in town. Their po’ boys are made on soft French bread shipped in from New Orleans. Fried shrimp, catfish or pulled pork are stuffed into po’ boys with their delicious rémoulade sauce, and don’t miss the smoked chicken wings or their signature rum cake.

If you need a little more than music, The Big Bad Brass Party will also feature live painting by  Trek Six, who also collaborated in the murals outside of The Stage, Oscar Saavedra! and Kazilla.
