It’s Cinco de Mayo, and, yea, we get it – it’s not really Mexico’s Independence Day. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any legit parties to hit up. Skip the generic margarita happy hour, and do it right until the Wednesday wee hours with this Cinco de Mayo sneak peek.
NEW YORK
Our favorite local DJs, Uproot Andy and Geko Jones, step it up and move to the big room on Cinco de Mayo at Santos Party House, the above ground venue with an underground vibe. Get in your villera fix, let out some gritos with Los Rudos del Norte, and top it off with a late night snack from the taco truck outside.
Enrique Bunbury drops down in NYC for two shows. The former Heroes del Silencio gets somber on his latest disc, Las Consequencias, but it’s no reason to get anti-social. Get in on the Bunbury cult following and watch him live.

L.A.
Mucho Wednesdays, the weekly party that gives and gives, is throwing their 3rd Annual Cinco de Mucho . Think of the usual no-frills flavor at La Cita with a ska-reggae twist in the form of Viernes 13. Plus, Anita Tijoux’s tour DJ, DJ Ethos spins.
Spaceland invites us to celebrate “Only 134 more days until Mexican Independence Day” with them, and with that tongue-in-cheek nod, we just might. Especially since it’ll be a battle of electronic wits between New York favorites Pacha Massive and Nortec Collective’s Clorofila.

SAN FRANCISCO
We’re hitting the night hard with sounds of salsa dura and streetwise cumbia from La Colectiva featuring Toqueson. They’ll be playing at our staple spot, the Elbo Room, while DJ Sonido Diablo brings the “entre mas corriente, mas ambiente” vibe with some choice cuts.
Two sexy ladies from TJ on the same night? Uh, yes. Julieta Venegas headlines and Ceci Bastida opens at the Fox Theater.

It’s lucha. It’s burlesque. It’s sideshow fun. It’s what Cinco de Mayo should be, and when you throw in some rockabilly ruckus from the Del Morroccos, it’s thoroughly convincing.
