Another year has flown by Remezcleros! I know we’re all eager to bust out the New Year’s Resolutions that may or may not only last us through February, but before we start thinking about an exciting new year of pachangas and start tossing out last year’s fashion trends, let’s take a moment to appreciate the best of 2009.
It’s been a crazy year kids! This year we saw our first African-American president take office, props to the Bronx-born boricua Sonia Sotomayor who became the first Latina ever to be appointed as U.S. Supreme Court Justice and who could forget how Kanye West made a fool of himself at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards?
On the local, San Pancho had its own unforgettable moments. Here’s a recap of our best of ’09 digs, shout back Remezcleros, SFRemezcla wants to know your take!
BEST SONG
This one is really hard, we had to go with,Calle 13 featuring Cafe Tacvba “No hay nadie como tu.” These guys are just awesome and together, even better. [Ok, it got released on 2008, but we dug it this year.]
BEST MOVIE
Best Movie: Rudo y Cursi, “Quiero que me quieras!” Yes we know, cheesy…but surprisingly insightful.
BEST MONTHLY PARTY
Tomenta Tropical‘s neo-cumbia infuses rave and electro sounds, courtesy of DJs Oro 11 and Disco Shawn, who mix shrewd vocals and Colombian classics.
BEST CONCERT
Bajofondo at Bimbo’s (see photo!). props to Latinos A Morir for getting the band together and convincing Peña Pachamama to re-open their restaurant and host an after party with the band!
BEST BURRITO
La Taqueria in la Mission. Soooooooo good.
BEST STREET FOOD
Belmar, the pridefully paisa taco stand next to La Gallinita Meat Market.
BEST EMERGING ARTISTS
Chocquibtown. Their fresh and innovative beats and lyrics inspire! Mad music y’all.
BEST OPEN MIC
Galeria de la Raza, the amphitheater for latino artists. Gracias Galeria!
BEST TAPAS
Limon in the Mission new and improved, also a little pricier but worth it.
BEST LATIN MUSIC
The Make out Room, cool vibe, mean margaritas and DJ’s Kool Kyle and Roger Más‘s El Superitmo never fails.
BEST STREET FESTIVAL
Carnaval, celebrated multiple latin cultures, with music, dance, food and and weekend- long after party’s, watch out Rio! Runner up: Love Fest-dance in the spirit of tolerance, respect, peace, justice, and yes evolution, and – yes love!
BEST LATIN ART GALLERY
MCCLA, is there anything artists can’t do? Our fave is Mission Grafica, a collection of Latino/Chicano posters that document our history.
